What is ASME™, ANSI, ISO, or DIN

Whether you’re a full-time mechanic, technician, or someone who routinely does projects around the house, the right set of tools is a must. You may be familiar with terms like ASME™, ANSI, ISO, or DIN, as you’ve probably seen them when shopping for tools. If you’ve never heard of these terms, they refer to certifications given by organizations that set standards for tools in North America. Learn more about these organizations, the certifications, and what to look for when shopping for tools. 

What is ASME™?

ASME stands for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It’s an organization that develops codes and standards related to mechanical engineering. The organization’s network of volunteers includes engineers, scientists, and government officials who work together to create standards for a variety of categories that range from professionals themselves to the tools they use in their work.  

ASME™ Certification

ASME™ is primarily related to mechanical products, but the organization also offers certifications for reinforced thermoset plastic corrosion-resistant equipment. These certifications cover the storage and processing of corrosive substances. If you’re operating a shop and need to store chemicals before and after car repairs, look for the ASME RTP certification to help ensure that your storage vessels won’t leak. 

ASME™ certifications are also available for bioprocessing equipment, boiler/pressure vessels and parts, and even personnel. This organization is committed to professional development, and its volunteers have the experience necessary to set standards.

What is ANSI?

ANSI refers to the American National Standards Institute. ANSI develops performance and quality standards for various products, including tools. ANSI is part of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Many of these standards are related to thee safety and quality of the products used in various workplaces. 

As a mechanic, plumber, construction worker, or weekend fixer, you want to know that your tools are going to last and that they can accomplish the tasks at hand. ANSI has standards related to commonly used tools like ratchets, socket wrenches, gages, extension cords, electrical tools, and more. 

How Does ANSI Certification Work? 

If an organization wants to get an ANSI certification, they need to submit an application, and a team will perform a site visit to verify compliance with the standards. The organization has a product certification accreditation committee to assess products including those commonly used in construction and manufacturing. Examples of some product categories that can be certified include oil and gas, plastic piping systems, plumbing products, electrical products, personal safety equipment, and building products. 

How Does ANSI Certify Tools? 

ANSI sets various standards and guidelines for tools, both by itself and in conjunction with other organizations. ANSI helped the ISO set standards for screws, nuts, and other fasteners, to improve uniformity. Without these standards, a mechanic in one country would have to switch out their tools when going to another country or working on an engine from another country. 

These standards also cover reliability. When you’re using screws and other fasteners in our work, you need to be sure they will hold together. Otherwise, your tabletops and cabinets may fall apart after years of use. 

For common tools like ratchets, wrenches, and breaker bars, ANSI offers standards that cover torque, durability, and design. These standards create consistency among brands since each brand needs to at least meet the minimum standard to comply. 

ANSI’s B11 standards cover safety standards for mechanical tools. These standards cover design, construction, and operation for various tools in commercial shops and within the home. 

What is ISO? 

ISO is a global standardization organization, and ANSI is its United States representative. This organization was formed with the goal of creating international standards in quality management and other areas that impact people on a global level. 

ISO has a variety of standards for hand-held and electric tools related to size parings, dimensions, compatibility, and more. Since tools are manufactured in multiple countries, these standards are in place so anyone can use them regardless of where they’re working on a project. You can buy a tool made in the USA and use it on a project in Italy and vise versa. 

These standards also apply to how tools like pliers and other instruments are tested for function. 

What is a DIN Number?

DIN is another standard-setting organization based in Germany. DIN stands for the Deutsches Institut Für Normung, or German Institute for Standardization. This organization has a committee for machine tools that covers metalworking and machine tools.  

This committee is primarily formed with industry professionals, along with select scientists and research professionals and a small number of safety personnel. The committee sets standards by observing the testing and manufacturing process and testing various machines used during production.

The DIN committee uses a more rigorous process to test and observe manufacturing standards, so if you’re looking for higher quality in your mechanical tools, look for products that meet DIN standards. 

What’s The Difference Between ASME™ and ANSI?

The main difference between these two organizations is that ANSI is more involved with standards for goods and supplies, while ASME™ is involved with setting standards for mechanical devices. ASME™ members and volunteers are professionals with experience in the industry, while ANSI’s members are made up of government agencies and organizations. 

ANSI evaluates the standards of other agencies to improve consistency. 

Why Do These Standards Matter? 

There are plenty of reasons to standardize the manufacturing and quality of tools, fasteners, machines, and other products commonly used by mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, and people working on home renovation projects. For one, you want to make sure your tools work regardless of the brand. 

Even if you opt for tools at a lower price, you can be sure that they won’t break after a couple of uses. Having tools that meet the minimum standards means you won’t be looking around for a different set when you run across a bolt or a lug nut that’s just a bit tighter than others on the engine.

Someone with real-world experience may remember an onsite accident due to faulty tools and write a standard aimed at keeping a similar accident from happening to anyone else. 

Which Certification Should I Look For When Shopping?
