How-To: Torque Wheel Nuts Properly with Torque Sticks

Select A Torque Stick With 20% Lower Torque Than Your Final Wheel Torque
Apply Torque On A Wheel Nut With A Quick Tap
Always Finish Tightening the Wheel Nuts With A Torque Wrench

Select A Torque Stick With 20% Lower Torque Than Your Final Wheel Torque

Start by using a breaker bar (not a torque wrench) to break loose the wheel nuts. Next, you’ll need to select the proper torque stick. Select a torque stick rated approximately 20% lower than the wheel torque you need.

Apply Torque On A Wheel Nut With A Quick Tap

Once you select the proper torque stick, attach it correctly to the air impact wrench along with the proper socket. When tightening the wheel nuts with the air impact wrench, use only a quick tap—don’t continue to apply torque.

Always Finish Tightening the Wheel Nuts With A Torque Wrench

To finish tightening the wheel nuts, use a torque wrench. Set the torque wrench to the proper wheel torque of the vehicle (using the vehicle manual as a reference). Then, hand torque each wheel nut again using the star pattern.

To me Capri tools have a great value. They are reasonably priced and the quality is there.I used to be a profesional mechanic and I wish I would have known about Capri Tools back then, they would have saved me thousands.

Like all the other tools I have purchased from Capri they have quality finish. The container is also top notch. Haven’t yet used these but from my experience with Capri tools I’m more then positive these tools are going to give me lots of use for years to come.

I’ll be truthful and honest about my review regarding the torque limiting extensions. I was never a fan of these torque limiting extensions (a.k.a. torque sticks) because after a while they would warp and loose the ability to torque with precision but of course a fellow Tech had said “it’s the same as a torque ratchet out of calibration”. He added ‘the difference between the two is we can recalibrate the ratchet but the sticks save us time”. Well with that thought in mind I pulled the trigger on my wallet. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to put the torque limiting extensions to the test do to the COVID-19 and the lay-off that followed. Hopefully when things get back to normal I can and will give an updated review.

I’ve been using these on lug nuts and they’re practically spot on. Make anything that needs torqued a breeze. I love them, no guessing if I’ve overdone it.
