Air Blow Guns

Air blow guns are perfect for cleaning or drying your work efficiently and fast. These hand-held tools let you deliver a steady stream of compressed air wherever you need it. Woodworkers use them to clean away excess shavings from their carvings. Car detailers use them to remove dirt and grime from hard to reach surfaces. They’re also great for clearing water from machinery.

When choosing an air blow gun, you’ll need to know about their different features and accessories as well as how to choose the right air compressor to go along with them. It’s also important to know how to stay safe when using one.

Features and Accessories of Air Blow Guns

Quality air blow guns offer several convenient features. These include:

  • Ergonomic grips: The more comfortable an air blow gun grip is, the easier it will be to handle.
  • Flow control knobs: On a good air blow gun, this should be located in an area that’s easy to reach.
  • Aluminum frames: A durable, lightweight body makes quality air blow guns easier to handle than power tools.

You can add useful accessories to your air blow gun, including:

  • Air nozzles: Special nozzles can help you get to hard-to-reach areas, lower sound levels, and use less compressed air.
  • Filters: Removing particles from the air can prevent wear and corrosion.
  • Regulators: These allow you to fine-tune the air pressure.
  • Lubricators: A mist of lubricant can help moving surfaces in the tool work more smoothly.
  • Air hoses: Air hoses with wider diameters offer greater air pressure.

Choosing an Air Compressor

An air compressor squeezes air into a fraction of its original volume, increasing its pressure. Most air compressors feed the air into a storage tank that can deliver a large burst of compressed air. When choosing an air compressor for an air blow gun, consider these characteristics:

  • Horsepower: Higher horsepower creates greater air pressure, allowing you to operate an air blow gun longer.
  • Cubic feet per minute (CFM): A compressor with a high CFM can deliver more air.
  • Tank capacity: Small tanks (4 to 6 gallons) store enough air for small projects. Larger tanks are great for automotive work and remodeling projects.
  • Power supply: Electric compressors are quieter for indoor work. Gas-powered compressors are better for outdoor work and offer more horsepower.

Hazards of Air Blow Guns

There are some risks to working with compressed air. Flying particles can hit your eyes, ears, or skin at high velocity, causing injury. The noise from air blow guns can damage hearing, and the dust they force into the air can be a respiratory hazard. Because of this, it is important to take the following safety precautions when using air blow guns:

  • Use an OSHA compliant nozzle, such as the one on our Windstorm EX high-performance air blow gun, with a safety tip that reduces air pressure to below 30 PSI if the nozzle is obstructed or dead-ended to prevent back pressure.
  • Use a low-noise safety air blow gun (below 80 dBA) to prevent hearing damage.
  • Never use compressed air to blow dirt off of your clothing or your body.
  • Never point an air blow gun directly at anyone else.
  • Do not use compressed air to clean up your work area. This can create dangerous airborne particles.
  • Wear protective equipment including goggles, a face shield, hearing protection, a respirator, protective clothing, and thick gloves made of rubber or leather.
  • Use a chip guard accessory that attaches to the air blow gun to shield you from debris blowback.
  • Shut off air valves and depressurize air lines before disconnecting anything. A pressurized line can lash out and cause injury.
  • Drain water traps or reservoirs before using air lines or compressors.
  • Check oil levels regularly and make sure all hoses, connectors, and fittings are in good condition.
